According to the U.S. Secret Service, the incident happened shortly after 6:00 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The suspect allegedly approached the checkpoint, removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at officers.
Secret Service officers returned fire and struck the suspect. He was taken to hospital, where he later died. A bystander was also hit during the shooting, but officials have not confirmed whether the bystander was struck by the suspect’s gunfire or by officers’ return fire.
No Secret Service personnel were injured. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time but was not affected.
Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best. However, the Secret Service has not publicly named him in its preliminary statement. The case remains under investigation.
This was a shooting near a White House checkpoint, not a confirmed attack inside the White House building.
