The Sunshine Protection Act has moved one step forward in Congress after the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 48–1 to report H.R.7389, the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act of 2026, to the full House as amended.
According to the amendment text, H.R.7389 now includes a section titled “Sunshine Protection Act.” The proposal would repeal part of the Uniform Time Act of 1966 and move the United States towards making daylight saving time permanent.

President Donald Trump welcomed the committee vote on social media, saying the bill would help Americans stop worrying about changing clocks twice a year. He also argued that clock changes create costs for people, cities and states, and said he would work to get the Sunshine Protection Act signed into law.
However, the bill has not become law yet. The 48–1 vote only means it passed the committee stage. It still needs approval from the full House, the Senate, and the President before it can take effect.
If passed, the change would end the twice-yearly clock change for most Americans and provide longer daylight in the evening.
