The United States is preparing for possible new military strikes against Iran as peace talks remain uncertain, according to reports from CBS News and Axios.
US media reports said that President Donald Trump met with senior national security officials on Friday to discuss the war with Iran and possible scenarios if negotiations collapse. The meeting reportedly included Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
The Trump administration was preparing for a possible fresh round of strikes against Iran, although no final decision had been made as of Friday afternoon. Some US military and intelligence personnel cancelled Memorial Day weekend plans in anticipation of possible action.
At the same time, diplomatic efforts are still ongoing. Pakistan’s army chief travelled to Tehran for talks, while Qatar also joined mediation efforts. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there had been slight progress, but warned that Washington needs a backup plan if negotiations fail.
The situation remains highly sensitive. A new US strike could trigger Iranian retaliation against American forces or US allies in the Middle East. It could also worsen tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas shipments. Any major disruption there could push energy prices higher and affect the global economy.
For now, the most accurate position is that Washington is preparing for possible military action while diplomacy continues. There is no confirmed order from Trump to launch new strikes yet.
